About Cash For Life in New Jersey
It was the New Jersey Lottery that launched Cash for Life, alongside New York, in June 2014. It remains the game’s home more than a decade on, with draws livestreamed for fans across the participating states. The Garden State is a great place to play Cash for Life, as you can add the Doubler feature and stay anonymous if you win one of the top prizes.
How to play Cash For Life in New Jersey
When selecting your five numbers from 1 to 60 and Cash Ball from 1 to 4, you can get a Quick Pick for the main numbers but still choose your own Cash Ball.
Play up to 28 consecutive drawings and decide whether to add Doubler (more details below) for an extra $1. You also have to indicate on your playslip whether you would take the annuity or the cash if you won the top prize.
Ticket sales close at 8:45 PM ET. The Play It Again option allows you to save time by replaying an old ticket with all the same selections at the same cost.
Claiming prizes in New Jersey
You have one year from the draw date to claim prizes in New Jersey.
Payouts of up to $599.99 can be received in cash from any NJ Lottery retailer, otherwise you can mail in winning tickets to the New Jersey Lottery, Attn: Validations, P.O. Box 041, Trenton NJ 08625-0041.
You can also claim prizes in person at the NJ Lottery’s headquarters in Trenton. A claim form is required for all winnings above $600.
Procedure for Lost and Damaged Tickets
You need a valid winning ticket to be able to claim a prize, so you will not be able to pick up any payouts if your entry has gone missing.
If you have a damaged ticket, or one that will not scan properly, you may still be able to claim.
You’ll need to file a claim and include a note about what has happened so that the NJ Lottery can investigate to see whether you might be entitled to a prize.
Taxes due on prizes in New Jersey
The rate of state tax in New Jersey starts at 5 percent on prizes over $5,000, going up to 8 percent on prizes over $500,000.
There is also a 24 percent federal withholding on prizes over $5,000. You may face more taxes if you are not a U.S. citizen or cannot provide your Social Security number.
All winners receive a Form W2-G at the end of the year to report their taxes, so consult with a financial expert if you need assistance.
