About Cash For Life in New York
The New York Lottery has been a part of Cash for Life since the beginning, when it started selling tickets alongside the New Jersey Lottery in June 2014. There have been more winners from the Empire State than anywhere else, including the Schenectady man who won the jackpot and three runner-up prizes in the same draw. However, players also face a higher rate of tax than anywhere else.
How to play Cash For Life in New York
Follow the same rules for how to play that are standard across the participating states, and make sure to buy your tickets before 8:45 PM ET. You can play the same numbers in up to 28 consecutive draws, or take advantage of the ‘Play It Again’ option to save time. This allows you to hand in an old ticket from the last 30 days and receive an identical one in return, starting with the next draw.
Claiming prizes in New York
The easiest way to claim a prize below $600 is just to visit a licensed retail location. For larger amounts, you'll need to complete a claim form and provide government-issued ID. You can claim at a customer service center, prize claim center or by mailing your ticket to the New York Lottery, PO Box 7533, Schenectady, NY 12301-7533.
Procedure for Lost and Damaged Tickets
You should contact an NY Lottery customer service center if you lose a ticket that you think is a winner, but unless you have signed the back of it anyone will be able to use it to claim a prize. A damaged ticket could still give you a payout, but it will need to be validated so you’ll have to sign the ticket, write your Social Security number on it and mail it in to the NY Lottery.
Taxes due on prizes in New York
Lottery prizes are regarded as income and are therefore subject to federal, state and local taxes in New York. The threshold starts at $5,000, so lower payouts will not face deductions, but anyone winning a larger amount will be hit more in the pocket than players from other states. The rate of state tax is 10.9 percent, while New York City has its own tax of 3.876 percent and for Yonkers it is 1.82575 percent.
