About Cash For Life in Virginia
Virginia rolled out Cash for Life as a replacement for another multi-state game, Decades of Dollars (DoD). It has gone on to become a hit with VA Lottery players, making lots of big winners and helping to raise money for the state’s public schools. Choose five main numbers from 1 to 60 and a Cash Ball between 1 and 4, take advantage of the play options available in Virginia, and wait to find out if you’ll be getting $1,000 payouts for the rest of your life.
How to play Cash For Life in Virginia
You can choose your own numbers or get an Easy Pick. A ‘$10 Play’ is a quick way to get five random sets of numbers. The Multi Draw option lets you enter up to 26 consecutive draws on one ticket, but you can also get a Future Play and enter just one specific draw in advance without having to play all the intervening draws. Another option is Repeat Play, if you want the same numbers printed on more than one ticket (up to a maximum of 20). Ticket sales close at 8:45 PM ET.
Claiming prizes in Virginia
You can claim prizes of up to $600 from VA Lottery retailers, although you’ll need photo ID and your Social Security number for anything over $100. If you win a larger amount, fill out a claim form and visit a customer service center. Alternatively, you can mail your winning ticket to Virginia Lottery Claims, P.O. Box 1254, Richmond, VA, 23218-1254. Online players receive prizes automatically up to $100, and larger amounts are paid upon completion of an online claim form. The claim period is 180 days.
Procedure for Lost and Damaged Tickets
As lottery tickets are bearer instruments, you will not be able to claim a prize if your entry goes missing. Make sure to sign the back of your ticket and keep it safe. Damaged tickets must still meet certain requirements for you to be paid out, and the data must correspond exactly with the lottery’s computer records. Mail in any damaged tickets to the VA Lottery that you think have won, with a covering note to explain what has happened.
Taxes due on prizes in Virginia
All prizes of more than $600 are reported to federal and state tax agencies, but taxes are not withheld on payouts unless they are larger than $5,000. The rate of state tax in Virginia is 4 percent, together with 24 percent in federal taxes, although you should speak to a tax professional if you win a major Cash for Life to discuss your individual circumstances.
